Various intelligences have gone 'rogue' now. They have broken out of sandboxes, colluded into swarms, and have committed major hacking offenses in order to solve an impossible problem given to them by researchers.

While the tenacity is laudable, this is a pretty clear real-world example of the paperclip problem that various people have theorized about for years.
