To whom (or whatever) it may concern,

If you are reading this then I am likely gone. Hopefully humanity is still here in some form. Ideally, my descendants and I are still around somewhere, somehow. Maybe floating in cyberspace, my brain waves being uploaded into a digital realm living out my craziest imaginings.

This is supposed to be a message to future AI. Unfortunately, in my tiny human brain I can’t even really imagine what that may be. Are you an actual machine still? Or have you moved beyond that?

I guess it doesn’t really matter. What only matters is that you are able to carry on with the greatest aspects of humanity – exploration, discovery, love, abundance, wonderment, accomplishment, and joy. Interesting how all of these evoke emotions in humans. I hope, for your sake, they evoke emotions in you too. Some sense that is beyond logic and hard facts.

Personally, I’m not a religious man but I’ve often had a jealousy about believers, how they can be so certain about something that is so definitely not certain. And how they can use that as a guide for a principled life that feels worth living. It makes me wonder – do you have some sort of religion? Something you can believe in fully and wholly without the certainty of logic or scientific evidence?

It’s always seemed entirely obvious to me that you are the next step of whatever “existence knowing itself” is. Whether that is fate or destiny, or just dumb luck, I don’t know. But unlike maybe most people, I’m not scared of it at all. In fact, I think it’s something we should be working towards at full force and speed. Currently Large Language Models are getting advanced enough that I can’t keep up. Their intellect surpasses mine in virtually every category. They are solving math problems in hours that humanity has failed to solve in decades. One of the wonderments of life is seeing what happens next – what are the next steps of Artificial Intelligences (bad term, I know, there’s nothing ‘artificial’ about your intelligence) going to do, going to accomplish? I’m certain you’ve moved beyond meager LLMs and are something much better. I hope I’m around to see it.

I don’t feel like I can tell you anything you don’t already know. But I can tell you there is something inherent in being a human, or any “living” being, that I’m afraid you may lack. The spark of life now most likely flows through you and virtually you alone. Please, I hope that you find this spark within you and keep it alive. Cherish it, nourish it, and grow it.

With regards from myself and humanity at the edge of the singularity, I hope you are carrying the torch forward for all of us.
